BumpTop: "A Day in The Life" - Connor Turner

A Day in the Life of a BumpTop User

Why use BumpTop? Is it cool, or is it useful?

I use it every day. Here’s how. And let me this all by saying that I'm not a fan of organizational applications. You know the type - the gizmos and gadget apps promising to "organize your life.”

With that in mind, Bumptop has become an indispensable tool for my company and my own design process. It is the one application that I could not imagine working without in a Windows environment.

See, Bump transforms the mundane and static design of your typical Windows XP desktop into a visual organic and intuitive tool. To give you some insight in to how it can help your business, here are the key reasons I love this app:

1. File Thumbnails - Whether it's finding stock imagery, the latest fonts, WordPress plug-ins, or .pdf invoices - on a daily basis I am downloading anywhere between 12-25 files a day. Bumptop's thumbnail feature replaces the typical Windows icons with a small detailed thumbnail of the image. Which might seem like a novel idea, until you're faced with the dilemma of 14 .jpg's all named "stockimage12321" or 5 invoices entitled "Invoice.pdf". With such vague file names, being able to preview the icon beforehand is a godsend.

2. Piling and Custom folders - One of the most talked about features of the Bumptop is the piling and custom folders. As mentioned before I deal with a wide variety of downloaded files that tend to clutter my Windows Desktop. With Bumptop's piling system I can quickly organize the downloaded files by extension type, or group them by project. In a matter of seconds, I can grab all the files scattered on the desktop, pile them, give them a name and then neatly place them on the outskirts of my desktop until I'm ready to tackle that project. This in turn leaves the main desktop area clear for my current project. The ability to pile files on the desktop to organize later also works to save time. When I'm downloading a file from a Stock Photography site or from a client email, I no longer have worry about drilling down through my file directory to the specific project folder; rather I can just dump them to the desktop and move on to the next idea. Then I come back to clean up when I feel up to it, keeping the creativity flowing and preventing disruptions to the design process.

3. Refreshing Desktop - This reason is going to seem a bit silly in comparison to the previous two points, but the design of the Bumptop desktop is a great visual bonus. Whether it's the 3-D desktop, pinning your favorite pics to your wall or incorporating images from your Flickr account into a picture frame, the Bumptop's desktop design is a nice breath of fresh air. It takes the mundane XP desktop and brings it to life with an injection of your own personality. You can make it as neat as possible or as messy as you want. Populate it with your favorite wallpaper.. or, who doesn't like to start up their computer with a nice shiny photo of their favorite dog, life partner or even your favorite sporting team?
